About

Volunteer with us to keep our waterways and stormwater management projects clean and functioning on campus.

The University of Tennessee Knoxville operates a Phase II Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4). The primary goal of the MS4 is to improve and/or maintain the quality of surface waters by reducing the amount of pollutants in storm water as a result of continued urbanization. Polluted runoff is commonly transported through MS4s, from which it is often discharged untreated into local water bodies. To prevent harmful pollutants from being washed or dumped into an MS4, the University stresses the treatment of this water through the use of green infrastructure practices and projects.
